On January 28, 1936, an article about Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk appeared in the Russian paper Pravda. It was headed “Muddle instead of Music”, and expressed Stalin's personal opinion of the work. The opera was withdrawn immediately and concerts were subsequently announced in the newspaper as " a concert by enemy of the people Shostakovich".
